Story

The Great South Run will take place in Portsmouth on Sunday 28th October 2012. Around 25,000 runners will take part in this highly popular run, raising £ millions for a variety of charities. The 10 mile course is fairly flat, thank goodness and offers a wide range of views and historic sites along the way, such as HMS Warrior, HMS Victory and the Spinnaker Tower. Along with the thousands of fun runners, club athletes and charity teams, will be a mix of celebrities and elite athletes from around the world. In 2011 Kenyan runner Leonard Komon won the mens race with a time of 46mins 18secs, whilst Ethiopian runner Asselefech Mergia won the ladies race in 52mins 55secs. Both amazing times considering the strength of the wind blowing against them for the final mile of the course along Southsea seafront, "the weather was too much for me and it was really tough at the end" said Komon. In 2009, Team GB favourite Mo Farah won the Great South Run in a time of 46 minutes and 26 seconds, the first British runner to win the race since Gary Staines secured his third win in 1996, Mo praised the Portsmouth crowd saying "The crowd made a big difference - they kept cheering me". This year we're honoured that local professional boxer LIAM GRIFFITHS is running to raise money for Asthma UK Liam said: I am running in the great south run this sundy to raise money and awarness for ASTHMA UK and memory of Charlotte who tragically lost her life to a asthma attack aged only 15. I would reveal also that in 2005 my mother suffered a bad cardiac arrest bought on by her severe asthma. She is lucky to be alive though has been in a wheelchair ever since. I would politely ask for anyone to give what they can as research for this condition is vital. Please sponsor Liam here.
